The Watauga Valley Conference could produce the most excitement for area basketball fans when January rolls around. The month of December pretty much gave us a good indication that it could go down to the wire between four schools.
A pair of home wins by University High over Hampton and Unaka have certainly got the attention of Cloudland.
The Highlanders could make a big splash if they can defeat the Junior Bucs twice in January. They play at Brooks Gym on January 29 and at home versus the Junior Bucs on the 11th.
Unaka’s head coach Aaron Dugger said it best: “You have to win your home games and hope to steal one or two on the road if you expect to have a shot. You could see a team win it with two or three league losses.”
Cloudland will play at North Greene on Jan. 4 and at home versus Unaka on Jan. 8. The Highlanders also play at Hampton the 20th.
If the ’Landers can win at home and at UH, they could be in the catbird seat. The losses by Hampton and Unaka are a pair of contests they could have easily won. But if ifs and buts were candy and nuts, then it would be Christmas every day.
And those are two presents that the Rangers and Bulldogs won’t have a chance to retreive. They’ll need for Cloudland to either lose at UH or North Greene should they be able to hold serve on their home court.
