Woman convicted of trying to set baby seat afire

By

SEVIERVILLE — A Sevier County jury took only 40 minutes to convict a woman of attempted aggravated child abuse for trying to set her infant son’s car seat on fire.

Becky Eury has been in jail since the May 2010 incident. Her five-week-old son was not injured, nor was her 3-year-old son, who was also in the car.

Prosecutors said Eury used a lighter to try to ignite the car seat, but could not explain why. The defense said Eury has a history of mental illness and postpartum depression.

The Mountain Press (http://bit.ly/13fYeJ8 ) reported that Eury did not respond when the judge asked her Thursday if she wanted to testify.

Sentencing was set for Sept. 5.
