Wintry weather causes closure of Carter County offices

5:25 pm | January 6, 2014

With an arctic air mass creating freezing temperatures and inclement weather in the region, many Carter County offices will be dark Tuesday.

Carter County Mayor Leon Humphrey said some office holders have made the decision to close.

“All the offices within the courthouse will be closed with the exception of the mayor’s office and emergency services,” Humphrey said. “The individual office holders have made that decision.”

The Carter County Health Department will also be closed and will resume normal hours on Wednesday at 7:30 a.m.

Because it is held inside the Carter County Courthouse, Circuit Court is also included in the closure, said Circuit Court Administrative Assistant Johnny Blankenship.

Two trial dates scheduled for Carter County Criminal Court have been rescheduled after Judge Robert E. Cupp canceled Tuesday’s proceedings.

General Sessions Court will be held as scheduled.

The Building and Grounds, Rules and Bylaws, Health and Welfare and Law Enforcement committee meetings were also rescheduled for Jan. 13 beginning at 6 p.m.

According to Carter County Emergency Services, a winter storm warning was in effect until 7 p.m. Monday for southeast Carter County.

A wind chill advisory was also issued and will remain in effect until noon Tuesday.
