Who’s On The Wall: Soldier’s childhood friendships lasts through time and war

Elmer Carter, Earl Lewis and Bill Sellers had a relationship that started as a childhood friendship among three boys and weathered the test of time and the challenges of war.

Elmer Carter served in World War II with the U.S. Navy. His friends, Bill Sellers and Earl Lewis, were also veterans. Sellers served in the Air Force, and Lewis was in the Army.
The trio grew up in the Cat Island community of Elizabethton. They went to school together and joined the military within a short time of each other. Of the group, Carter is the only survivor. Lewis was killed during the Korean War and Sellers died Dec. 16, 2011. Carter, who is now 85 years old, said that as children the three were always together.
“We just played around like three little boys do,” he said. “We went to school together in elementary school. None of us went to high school.”
