BRISTOL — Tennessee’s new head football coach was switching gears, literally, when he arrived at Bristol Motor Speedway Sunday.
Butch Jones wrapped up the Vols’ first scrimmage of spring football camp and invited the families of players and staff members for a special day Saturday, then became a NASCAR fan once he stepped into the pit area with a big contingent of assistant coaches and staff members from the University of Tennessee.
Sunday night, it was back to work again with the Vols.
“It’s an opportunity to be a fan and sit back and watch the great drivers walking around and people who you know a little bit and a chance to meet with them,” said Jones, who served as Grand Marshal for the Food City 500. “I met with Coach (Joe) Gibbs talking NASCAR and football and all of that. I’m like a little kid. It’s a great change of pace, but it’s amazing, you flip gears in a hurry and continuing to improve our football team.”
