ROME (AP) — A Canadian extreme sportsman has crashed between two rock towers and died during a parachute jump in Italy’s Dolomite mountains.

Rescuers said Mario Richard died Monday after launching himself from a thousand-meter (3,000-foot) peak near Bolzano.

Gino Comelli of the Alpine rescue service in Val di Fassa told The Associated Press that Richard had already done three successful jumps from the same peak the previous day but apparently miscalculated on the fatal jump by three meters (yards).

The 47-year-old lived in Utah, where he helped run Moab B.A.S.E. Adventures, which specializes in the extreme sport of jumping with a parachute.

A local city hall official says the body is being held in Canazei pending cremation and repatriation to the United States.
