Martha Erwin is looking to the future to preserve the past.
When the Unicoi County Heritage Museum and Clinchfield Railroad Museum opens for the season Saturday, a groundbreaking ceremony will be held for a proposed addition to the Clinchfield Railroad Museum.
The Heritage Museum will open Saturday at 11 a.m.
Erwin, museum curator for more than 20 years, said the proposed additional room on the back of the railroad museum would house the centralized traffic control unit and other memorabilia and artifacts.
“We have all of this but nowhere to house it,” Erwin said.
The museums are currently open from May to October, but in order to have a sign on the interstate, they must remain open all year.
“When the renovation is complete, the railroad museum will be open year-round and will meet the criteria for a designated railroad sign on the interstate.”
Erwin said she hopes the number of visitors to the Railroad Museum will make it possible to open the Heritage Museum year-round as well.
