Two local fires under investigation10:27 am | January 18, 2013
Fire investigators are working to determine the causes of two fires that damaged local homes this week in different areas of Carter County.
The first, on Tuesday morning, reportedly started on the front porch of a residence at 563 Whaleytown Road, in Butler.
Carter County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Wayne Pritchard said a neighbor saw flames and smoke coming from the house and called 911.
Pritchard said the home’s porch and front living area were heavily damaged by the fire.
The homeowner, Allen Matheson, was reportedly in Florida at the time of the fire, and his son, who lives in the home, was not present when it started.
The second fire occurred early Thursday morning at a Watauga residence.
CCSD Deputy Dreama Pullon reported that homeowner Michael Johnson and his wife were sleeping at their 124 E Riverview Ave. home when the barking of their dogs alerted them to smoke and flame.
Johnson told Pullon that the clothes dryer was running in the trailer at the time, and he noticed flames coming from the laundry room as they were leaving.
The sheriff’s department is investigating both incidents.
