Tragedy inspires Top Fuel’s Herbert

BRISTOL — “We want to let everybody know, we’re ready to race again.”

With those words Doug Herbert, one of the most successful Top Fuel drivers at Bristol Dragway, officially cemented his plans to return to NHRA Mellow Yellow Series racing during next weekend’s Ford Thunder Valley Nationals.

It’s been five years since Herbert has been able to put together a complete season in his sport. However, on Father’s Day weekend, with two special individuals in the back of his mind and on the side of his machine, Herbert wants to show potential sponsors that he can do it.

He’s ready to resume a full-time schedule on quarter-mile strips against the NHRA’s best.

“I’m funding the car, but we’re putting the B.R.A.K.E.S. charity on the side with the picture of my boys,” Herbert said. “It gets teenagers asking questions, ‘Who are these boys?’

“When they find out, it’s shocking to them.”
