Track & field: HV, JCHS take on tough competition

BLOUNTVILLE—Happy Valley and Johnson County stepped out of the Three Rivers Conference track and field race on Tuesday, and the going got quite challenging.

Neither team was able to pull off any victories in the eight-team meet at Sullivan Central. However, recording runner-up finishes were Happy Valley senior Emily Holtsclaw in the girls’ 200-meter dash and Warrior senior Tyler Adkins in the boys’ 300 hurdles.

“It definitely wasn’t our best day,” Happy Valley coach Matt Estep said. “We had a lot of things go wrong. Our boys won last week, and then the girls were second.
“It was a little bit different world this week. There were more teams, more big teams.”

For the Longhorns, meanwhile, the top showing was by sophomore Mackenzie Bauer — third place in the girls’ 1,600.

“That tougher competition can make them better,” Johnson County coach Penny Gentry said of her athletes. “They’re going to run faster to keep up.”
