Tough opener awaits Cyclones2:14 am | May 21, 2013
MURFREESBORO — Gas was 24 cents a gallon, a postage stamp cost 4 cents and the Everly Brothers had nothing to do but dream when Elizabethton last played in the TSSAA state baseball tournament. Fifty-five years later, they’re back.
The Cyclones (28-10) drew a tough first round opponent in Pigeon Forge (35-2) but it’s only fitting. The boys at ’Betsy have done things the hard way all season long.
Today they’ll try and pull off another remarkable feat when they take the field in Smyrna at 6:30 (CST) to play the Tigers. A win by “Cardiac Clones” would rip the hearts out of what is expected to be a large following from Sevier County.
Elizabethon could see South Carolina signee Wil Crowe take the mound but it’s questionable.
He tossed a no-hitter against Greeneville on Friday night striking out 12 batters while allowing only one base runner. More importantly, he threw only 74 pitches. It’s not many but they add up when you’re constantly offering up 94 mile-per-hour fast balls.
