Mathes told reporters on Monday that Jeffery Lynn Whitehead, 61, 203 Tower Road, and Jonathan Scott Shell, 22, 565 Sugar Hollow Road, both of Roan Mountain, were charged with two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated arson and two counts of tampering with evidence-abuse of a corpse.

Tyler Daniel Shell, 20, 450 Modock Road, Trade, Tenn., was charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder.

Jonathan Shell, who the sheriff said was Shell’s son, and Whitehead, who he said had married Russell Shell’s ex-wife, are being held at the Carter County Jail without bond.

Tyler Shell was booked into jail Sunday and was later released on a $10,000 bond.

According to investigators, sometime between 3 and 9 a.m. on June 26, Brock, 61, was shot in the throat and then the head, and Glenn Shell, 54, was shot in the head. Both bodies were then doused with gasoline and set on fire inside the metal garage where the two were living.
