Threat prompts evacuation of courthouse

Law enforcement has given the all clear after a thorough search of the Carter County Courthouse.

People are now being allowed back into the building.

The courthouse was evacuated this morning after receiving a suspicious phone call.

Employees standing outside the building said a bomb threat had been called in earlier today shortly before employees were told to evacuate.

Police and fire personnel from the city and county quickly cordoned of all streets leading to the monument and diverted traffic around it.

Elizabethton Police Department Investigator Joy Markland confirmed that the courthouse received a “suspicious call” and employees inside and in other nearby buildings were asked to evacuate for their safety.

Markland said Carter County wasn’t the only location in the state to receive a suspicious call.

According to local news site wjhl.com, the Greene County Courthouse received a similar phone call and was also evacuated.
