The Elizabethton National Cal Ripken League crowned its 12-year old champions on Friday evening at T.J. Burleson Memorial Field. In convincing fashion, Team KFC toppled upset-minded Mitchell County 11-0 in four innings.
Right-handed pitcher Eric Wilson was named Most Valuable Player for his five strikeouts, one walk and no-hit performance on the bump. Wilson also batted well, going 2-for-3 and driving in the final two runs of the game with a double.
“We are all pretty good friends on this team,” Wilson said. “It was easy pitching out there once we got the big lead and Chris Taylor hit that home run. I just tried to work in and out and stay in the strike zone.”
KFC jumped on Mitchell County starter Braydon Keller for five runs in the last of the first as Tanner Marshall sparked the offense with a single to center. Nicholas Johnson followed with a double to the fence in center field to plate Marshall and give Team KFC a 1-0 lead.
