TBI agent tells jury: Potter admitted ‘he did it’10:00 am | October 10, 2013
“At the end, he admitted that he did it,” Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Special Agent Scott Lott told the jury on Wednesday.
Jurors who will decide Potter’s fate on charges that he murdered Billy Clay Payne Jr. and Billie Jean Hayworth began watching the video Tuesday afternoon, seeing about half before court was recessed.
As court reconvened Wednesday morning, the jury saw the second half of that tape, wherein special agents Lott and Mike Hannon persisted in their efforts to elicit a confession from Potter.
In his previous testimony, Lott said that he looked for people with “bad blood” against Payne and Hayworth, who were found shot to death in their home at 128 James Davis Lane in Mountain City on Jan. 31, 2012. That search led to Potter, and to Jamie Curd, Payne’s second cousin.
Lott testified on Tuesday that Curd had confessed to him that he and Potter carried out the murders. He then arranged for Curd to call Potter to discuss aspects of the slayings while being recorded. Curd asked Potter if he had “got rid of everything from Billy’s house,” to which Potter replied, “Uh-huh.”
Potter was arrested at approximately 3:45 a.m. on Feb. 7, 2012. His interview took place roughly 15 minutes later.
