Two local post offices might have shorter operating hours as part of the U.S. Postal Service’s plan to save money, and it appears for the most part that residents prefer that over possible alternatives.

Watauga residents, in a recent U.S. Postal Service survey, indicated they would like their local post office to stay open with reduced hours rather than other alternatives.

The Butler and Watauga post offices, both currently open for eight hours a day, could see hours reduced; the Butler office would be open six hours and the Watauga office would be open four hours.

“It’s just sad that we’ll be down to four hours,” Watauga City Manager Hattie Skeans said. “But I am hoping to keep it at four hours. Four hours is better than nothing. We just hope it stays with us.”
