‘Stories from the Pumpkin Patch’ returns to Tipton-Haynes9:36 am | October 15, 2012
Tipton-Haynes State Historic Site in Johnson City will hold its 18th annual Stories from the Pumpkin Patch on Saturday, Oct. 20, from 4 to 8 p.m.
Come and join the fun at this spooky time of the year for an evening of fun and family-oriented tales. This year, listeners will enjoy stories from Larry Kelley, Gayleen Kelley and Bob “Mountain Man” Phillips.
Larry and Gayleen Kelley work hard to craft their stories so that the audience will enjoy every moment of every story. National recognition for their storytelling talents has resulted in many opportunities to share their family humor stories at schools and festivals. They use their God-given talents to share stories that uplift, enlighten, encourage and entertain. With a performance by the Kelleys, listeners can be assured of good clean laughter suitable for the entire family is guaranteed.
Phillips lives at the foot of the Cherokee National Forest in a 140-year-old cabin. Phillips said that all his stories are true, based on the remote possibility there exists a slim chance of possible fact. He specializes in mountain stories, stories about the South Central community where he lives, and Jack Tales.
Edgar Allan Poe’s scary story, “The Black Cat” will be presented in four acts as visitors move from the law office, historic house and basement kitchen. It’s sure to be a fun and memorable experience.
Attendees can also take a tractor-pulled hayride around the site, roast a hotdog over an open fire and visit the cabin to enjoy mulled cider and ginger snaps while listening to Civil War stories based on the autobiography of Nathanial Harris, nephew of Landon Carter Haynes. Between 4 and 6 p.m., young children can make small crafts such as a cornhusk ghost, a pumpkin drawing, a balloon jack-o-lantern and so forth. The cave will be lit and ready for visitors to explore.
Admission to Stories from the Pumpkin Patch is $5 for adults and $2.50 for 12 and under. This price will include all activities and a hot dog roast with all the trimmings. For more information, call 926-3631.
