Store offers adoption center to help animals

Petsense, the new pet supply store located at 776 W. Elk Ave., Elizabethton, offers more than a place for pet owners to pick up supplies needed for their furry friends.

The store also offers homeless shelter pets a second chance at finding a new forever home.
Inside Petsense is a pet adoption center where cats and occasionally dogs from the Elizabethton/Carter County Animal Shelter wait for a new human pal to come find them and take them to their new home.

ECCAS Manager April Jones said the partnership with Petsense has worked out very well for the animals at the shelter, especially the cats.

“I have taken 12 cats to the store over three different days,” Jones said. “All of those have been adopted. Most of them have gone within 24 hours. It is fantastic. When you compare that to the cats in the shelter, we had 16 adopted through the whole month of September.”

Jones said she was approached by the corporate Petsense office and a meeting was arranged for her and Petsense manager Rocky Davenport. Davenport explained the pet adoption center is available in every Petsense store as a way to help local animal shelter find homes.

“We do this totally for the animal shelter,” Davenport said. “It has been great. Every cat that April has brought here to us has been adopted.”

The feline pets reap a bigger benefit from the Petsense adoption center. Because cats use litter boxes, they can stay at the store in their kennels overnight. The pets are given food and water before closing just like they would receive at the shelter.
