NASHVILLE — A bill to allow people with handgun carry permits to store firearms in their vehicles no matter where they are parked has already been sent to the governor’s desk, but sponsors are still trying to clarify whether the measure affects employment law in Tennessee.

Senate Speaker Ron Ramsey and four fellow Republican co-sponsors on Thursday submitted a letter for inclusion into the Senate journal to emphasize that employers who fire workers for storing firearms in their vehicles could face wrongful discharge claims.

Republican Rep. Jeremy Faison of Cosby, the main House sponsor, had stressed that bill wouldn’t affect employers’ abilities to fire anyone, and the House rejected efforts to include enhanced protections for workers.

The bill passed both chambers by large margins despite the business community’s property rights concerns.
