For Elizabethton native Justin Stanton and the band Snarky Puppy, it was a long road to an unexpected Grammy win last week.

Snarky Puppy took home a Grammy award for the best R&B performance for the song “Something” featuring Lalah Hathaway. Stanton plays the trumpet and piano in the band, one he’s been with for the past seven years.

Stanton said a Grammy win was something the band had never expected.

“I never thought I would end up at the Grammys,” he said. “Snarky Puppy has been kind of an underground, under-the-radar kind of band. We have just been doing our thing, trying to reach as many people as we can.”
