Teresa Masters, a local contestant in a nationwide singing contest, has advanced another round and joins 39 other finalists for the next round of competition.

Masters advanced last week in “The Most Powerful Voices” contest, a national competition being sponsored by the Gospel Music Channel, Light Records and The American Heart Association.

After making the list of Top 100 contestants, her challenge was to receive enough votes to move into the Top 40 in a contest where popular votes are the driving force.

Masters said each time artists advance to a new round of competition, they generally receive an e-mail from GMC congratulating them on their achievement.

“However, sometimes it takes two or three days to receive this email after the new round has already begun,” Masters said. “I have learned to just go to the  site and see if I’m there.”

So, when voting ended March 25, she at once checked the website.

“When I started to scroll through the alphabet for my name, my adrenalin was rushing,” she added. “When seeing my name on the advanced list, my heart skipped a beat and, of course, I got all teary-eyed and at the same time praising God for letting me get this far.”

Masters submitted a song she wrote in 2001 titled “I Got Mercy” in the gospel/traditional category of the contest.

“My main purpose is to use my talents for God,” said the Unicoi resident. “This may not be the route he has for me. If not, I know he has something better in store.  After all, His ways are far more better than ours. He sees the future, and I trust Him completely to take care of me.”

Masters is hopeful the public will remain supportive as she advances in her quest. Now that she has made it into the Top 40, she faces one more round of voting to establish the Top 10 contestants.

“The Top 10 are judged according by their talent,” Masters said.

Masters said those Top 10 finalists will be looked at by promoters and publishers. “Getting to the Top 10 could open many doors,” Masters added.

To vote for her, visit www.watchgmctv.com/music and register as a voter in the competition.

Once registered at the site, click on “Artist” and then click “T” for “Teresa.” Masters welcomes everyone to listen to the song and vote daily.

“He has a plan for all our lives,” Masters said. “I am just trying to find out what mine is concerning music.”
She said she would not have reached the Top 40 if not for God and the support of her neighbors.

“I appreciate so much each one taking the time to vote for me daily,” Masters said. “You can find me on Facebook at “I Got Mercy.”

She welcomes Facebook likes as well as votes at the contest’s official site. “Please share with your family and friends,” she said.

Her Facebook page also has videos and a link to direct visitors to the official website for casting a vote in support of her bid to be recognized as one of America’s “Most Powerful Voices.”

The winner of “The Most Powerful Voices” contest will be announced Monday, May 20.
