The Shields twins kept it all in the family in Saturday morning’s Nor-Well Roan Groan Road Race.
The 19-year-old sisters, Emily and Katherine, from Salisbury (N.C.) finished first and second place in the Women’s Category 1-4, which started at Cat Island Park and finished at Carvers Gap on the state line.
Both attend Lees-McRae College in nearby Banner Elk. Emily completed the 30-mile course in 1:58:58.000, while Katherine crossed in 1:58:58.001.
“Up the hill I pretty much just went up into a group of six, and then we just sprinted up in,” Emily said.
Indeed, the top five women’s finishers each clocked a 1:58:58.
“It’s nice having both of us,” Katherine said. “Because if other people pass, we can trade off of it and the other person can recover.”
