The Carter County Sheriff’s Department placed one of its own under arrest over the weekend on allegations that he assaulted two people in the Milligan community.

On Sunday, the CCSD arrested Deputy Matt Ainsworth, 25, of Stonewall Jackson Boulevard, Elizabethton, and charged him with assault and assault under domestic violence.

According to a press release from the sheriff’s department, Ainsworth was taken into custody after “allegedly assaulting a female girlfriend and her male neighbor, who allegedly attempted to intervene during the domestic altercation.”

For security reasons, Ainsworth was transported to the Washington County Detention Center and held under a $8,000 bond. He has been placed on administrative leave without pay pending the results of the investigation.

In the release, Sheriff Chris Mathes said it was “extremely disheartening and disappointing … to have to investigate and arrest one of your own deputies.” He added that, despite that disappointment, there was “no place in law enforcement” for someone who chooses to violate the law.
