A reported bomb threat that turned out to be a false alarm delayed the weekend for Elizabethton High School students on Friday.

Kenny Hardin, EHS safety committee chairman, said students had just been dismissed from the school when an evacuation was initiated.

“We probably had about 800 kids exiting the building as it was occurring,” Hardin said.

Although the Elizabethton Police Department was not able to verify any details, Hardin said the evacuation resulted from a school official being notified by a student that a phone call from an unknown person indicated something might happen.

“We just had a call come in to one of our students with a possible threat,” Hardin said. “We took all precautions by putting our safety plan into effect.”

Once students were cleared to go back inside the school, the matter was handed over to the Elizabethton Police Department.
