Scorekeeping blunder robs Unaka
By Rick Sheek
GRAY — Unaka’s basketball team didn’t lose to Volunteer on the court in Saturday night’s Trailblazer Classic.
The Rangers were knocked off by the Daniel Boone crew which ran the scoreboard and kept the official book.
Unaka led 54-52 at the end of regulation at Bobby Snyder Gymnasium. That according to the Rangers’ bookkeeper and the Elizabethton Star.
However, the scoreboard read 52-all and overtime ensued. Volunteer emerged the official winner 64-59, although the Rangers actually scored 61 points.
The controversy involved a basket the Boone staff didn’t count in the fourth quarter. Unaka’s Spencer Nave came up with a steal, and Billy Bales put-back made it 41-30.
