Scarecrows, cranberries part of Johnson County fall celebrations11:05 am | October 3, 2013
Scarecrows, “Lizard Lick Towing” and cranberries … it’s October in Johnson County.
October gives visitors and residents alike multiple opportunities to celebrate fall with fun, food and friends.
Already under way, Mountain City is ushering in fall with a quaint street lined with creative scarecrows. Beginning this week, scarecrows galore line Main Street to kick off the annual “Scarecrows on Main” event.
Lamp posts are adorned with fall decor and scarecrows, assembled and presented by area churches, businesses, clubs and groups, throughout the month of October.
“Participants began assembling the masterpieces as early as Monday morning,” said Karla Prudhomme, one of the organizers of the event.
“Everyone has been putting the finishing touches on a Spongebob scarecrow, a group of attorney scarecrows and even a ‘Preacher Crow,’ ready to deliver a sermon.”
The annual competition can also yield cash prizes, which will be awarded by a panel of visiting judges including Milligan College president Dr. Bill Greer, Lt. Gov Ron Ramsey and state Rep. Timothy Hill. There will also be a “people’s choice” contest winner.
