Run to 2003 substate vivid memory in Johnson County

MOUNTAIN CITY — Very rarely has a team that advanced only to what was then called the substate been remembered as much as the 2002-03 Johnson County boys basketball team.
The reason this team has a special place in the history of local basketball was how the Longhorns accomplished the feat.
Johnson County had a good regular season, finishing third in a loaded Watauga Conference, but had a very disappointing District 1-AA Tournament where it lost to Sullivan Central by 31 points and fell in the third-place game to Todd Whittemore’s Volunteer Falcons, who, ironically, is now the girls coach at Johnson County.
