In addition, the Monday reception saluted charter members of the local chapter, formed in December 2002 by two local members of the Knoxville chapter – Bill Hampton and former member Dr. Bert Allen.

Current president Alan Sipe recognized Hampton with a plaque for his founding role with the local chapter.

“This group started with 62 charter members,” Hampton said. “It makes me so proud to know how the group has grown, from where it was in the beginning to where it is today and what we are doing today.”

Hampton said there were struggles early on keeping the local chapter in line with the Rolling Thunder constitution but in the end, the hard work paid off and the group stayed true to the Rolling Thunder goal of supporting veterans.

“I had a vision of an active chapter with a good, solid reputation in the community,” Hampton said. “I would put this group’s reputation up against any in the state.”
