County Attorney Keith Bowers briefs the county’s Financial Management Committee on the letter his office received detailing the Carter County Emergency and Rescue Squad’s offer to the county.

At the county’s Financial Management Committee meeting on Wednesday morning, County Attorney Keith Bowers announced that, after more than three months of silence, the rescue squad had sent his office a proposal on Tuesday.

“The rescue squad has laid out the parameters of what they are willing to do,” Bowers said. “But there’s a lot of data that has to be added.”

During the County Commission meeting on Nov. 19, the squad requested an exclusive four-year contract to be the county’s lone ambulance provider, while adding charges for services such as prisoner and corpse transportation.

Instead, the commission approved a one-year contract while striking those charges.

In the letter sent to Bowers’ office, however, the squad announced it still plans to charge for corpse and prisoner transport. Previously, the charge was set at $150 when the squad met with the commission on Nov. 19. This time, however, the squad left the specific charge unstated.

“CCERS is willing to provide prisoner transport on behalf of the county to Sycamore Shoals Hospital at the then-prevailing Medicare rate,” the letter reads. “CCERS is willing to provide corpse transport on behalf of the county to SSH at the then-prevailing Medicare rate.”
