The Elizabethton Housing and Development Agency Board of Directors voiced their support for a redevelopment district in Elizabethton along West Elk Avenue from Mill Street to the area of Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park.

Elizabethton Director of Planning and Development Jon Hartman shared the plans for redevelopment and a Tax Increment Financing district with the board to get their initial approval. He explained that under the Tennessee Housing Act, the housing board has the authority to establish a redevelopment district if members believe it will benefit the city.

Hartman said he was bringing the plan to the board early in the process to make them aware of the plans for the area. If the board supports those plans, it will have to vote to institute the redevelopment district.

Hartman explained the goal is first to focus on redevelopment in the area of the old Bemberg plant and the remaining areas of the old North American Rayon plant. He said leaders were in talks with Charles Von Cannon, owner of the Bemberg property, concerning the redevelopment.
