To the editor:
The front page of my newspaper gave me a moment of reflection today. I was astonished as I read our “esteemed” sheriff lamented that the new jail was already over populated and understaffed.
How can this be? The amount of time and taxpayer money that has been invested in this situation is staggering, and it appears as if it was for nothing.
When the plans for the jail were drafted, shouldn’t someone have accounted for inmate inflation over a period of time? At the time the facility was being considered, wouldn’t it have been safe to assume that a bigger staff would be required? These problems only show how the county handles situations; a temporary fix for any situation, and plan for the present, not the future.
