Rangers work on basics

Sharing the wealth means sharing the athletes, and Unaka did that during spring football practice.

Two dozen players took part in spring drills while eight more key returnees were involved in baseball.

Head coach Steve “Pink” McKinney doesn’t mind his kids participating in two or three sports. He feels like it helps the school’s athletic program as a whole.

“The only thing I ever issue during spring drills is shorts, shirt and a helmet,” said McKinney. “We don’t scrimmage. We got time to find out who can hit and not hit. We go over technique — put them in the right stance and familiarize the kids with our offense and what we like to do. We allow them to try and play different positions, but we let them know it’s the coaches’ decision as to where they’ll wind up.”
