Unaka hasn’t tasted a Watauga Valley Conference Championship since 2006, but they took a big step toward earning a slice of the pie on Tuesday. The Rangers surged to a 22-point halftime lead then held off charging Cloudland 64-59 on Tuesday night before a packed house inside of Snavely Gymnasium.
A win over University High at home on Friday would give the “Creekers” a least a share of the crown. Cloudland can do likewise if it defeats Hampton at home on Friday.
The Rangers held a comfortable 40-18 lead at the half only to watch Cloudland pull within two at 61-59 with 39 seconds remaining. Head coach Aaron Dugger warned his team about getting hit back when the second half begin. Fortunately for Unaka, it was able to survive the “Highlander Haymakers.”
