Push being made for donations to replace lighting for Fraser fir

9:11 am | October 8, 2012

With just days to go before it is time to get the big Fraser fir ready for the annual Christmas lighting ceremony, only $1,285 has been received for the “Buy A Bulb” fund.

Before the lights can be activated this holiday season, the electrical wiring, in addition to the lights, must be replaced. Keith Hart of the Carter County University of Tennessee Extension Office, who oversees the maintenance of the tree, said the wires have become very brittle and many of the bulbs need to be replaced. Hart said it will take about $3,000 to replace the wiring and buy new LED lights. There are about 1,200 to 1,300 lights on the tree, and the cost of the bulbs is 30 cents each.
