Local emergency personnel take Keith Brummitt out of the woods on Tuesday afternoon after he was shot in the shoulder by a Carter County deputy. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and Carter County Sheriff’s Department are investigating the incident.

TBI Public Information Officer Kristin Helm confirmed Tuesday that an agent is investigating the incident.

“A couple of our units were actually trying to arrest an individual who had several felony and misdemeanor warrants,” said Sheriff Chris Mathes, who was at the scene of the incident at the corner of Milligan Highway and Okolona Road.

Deputies, who Mathes did not identify, learned the wanted man, Keith Lynn Brummitt, was in the area of the Dollar General Store about 1 p.m.

“Our officers saw him and a foot pursuit was engaged at that point,” Mathes said.

The officers lost sight of the man, Mathes said, as he went into the tree line off Okolona Road. The officers split up in an effort to find him.
