Princesses plan fundraiser for animal shelter10:00 am | May 23, 2013
Current and former title holders associated with the Miss Watauga Valley Scholarship Pageant will band together for a fundraiser titled “Princesses for Pets” from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, May 25.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the Elizabethton/Carter County Animal Shelter. The princesses will assemble in front of Peebles in Elizabethton. They will raise money to buy a new microchip scanner and parvo vaccines.
“The Miss America System is all about scholarship and service,” said Linda Adams, one of the directors of Miss Watauga Valley. Adams directs the pageant along with her daughter, Becky Simerly, and Andy Hall.
“We started our Little Miss pageants as a way to raise money for scholarships for our Miss Watauga Valley and to support community projects.”
Adams said the benefit is also an opportunity to give the pageant’s Little Miss girls an opportunity to participate in community service.
“These girls have shown a big interest in participating and helping out wherever they can,” Adams said. “This time we all wanted to do something to support the animal shelter.”
Adams said she checked with the shelter’s director, April Jones, about needs at the shelter.
“She said they needed a new microchip scanner and if they turn the old one in, they can get a new one for $210,” Adams said.
In addition, Adams said they hope to be able to raise enough money to pay for parvo vaccines, as well as supplies such as dog and cat food and non-clumping cat litter.
The shelter will also bring some puppies to the event, if possible, to try to match them with potential families for adoption.
Participants include Kaylee Hollifield, Little Miss Watauga Valley Grand Supreme 2013 and Little Miss Tennessee United States 2013; Carlee Sullins, Mini-Grand Supreme for Cuties for a Cure; and Hayley Hood, Miss Pre-Teen Tennessee United States 2013 and Little Miss Watauga Valley Grand Supreme 2012.
Brittany Kyte, the reigning Miss Watauga Valley, will also make an appearance at the event.
