Pressure intensifies as district play opens

For a number of Carter and Johnson County basketball teams, the start of district tournament play means one thing: Win or go home.

Weather permitting, District 1-AA Tournament basketball will begin at Bayless Gymnasium tonight while the 1-A teams begin their quest for a gold plaque at Daniel Boone Friday.

“It becomes a one-game season,” said Happy Valley girls coach Larry Abel. “It’s your season. You win and get a chance for tomorrow, you lose and you’re done. The girls are well aware of that. It’s that time of year, you’ve got to get it going, get on a hot streak and good things can happen.”

Two 1-AA games scheduled for Wednesday were moved courtesy of a TSSAA waiver. Instead of the number two seeds getting a potential edge, each of the three girls quarterfinal bouts will be played tonight with a trio of boys contests slated for Friday.

On the opposite side of the equation, District 1-A action will deliver a two-day, four-game slate to set the stage for championship play early in the week.
