Prep football: Longhorns have ‘successful’ spring

Johnson County’s football team skidded to the close of 2012 on a downward spiral.
The Longhorns backed into the Class 3A state playoffs, before losing their fourth straight game to eventual semifinalist Elizabethton.
The ’Horns are regrouped and raring to go this fall, following a successful spring camp at McEwen Stadium.
“We didn’t really put in a lot of new stuff in the spring,” veteran Johnson County coach Mike Atwood said. “We usually just use stuff in the spring to get an idea of where to put people, but we had a good spring. We had our Maroon-White game, and really saw some good things out of some young people.”
A large group of rising juniors will anchor this bunch, the coach envisions. There are but five seniors on the roster.
“We have a really small senior class,” Atwood said. “We saw a lot of good things out of our young kids. We just got to put in a lot of good things both offensive and defensively.
“I thought we had a successful spring. Nobody got injured, so that was a big thing.”
