Although Cathy Selbert is completing her fifth year of teaching agricultural sciences at Happy Valley High School, some of her projects are just now beginning to bloom.
“I had the greenhouse on the schedule last year, but we didn’t get it finished,” Selbert said. “It was finished in time to start greenhouse class this semester, and it has been just wonderful having it.”
Though the greenhouse is the most recent of Selbert’s projects to blossom, it wasn’t long after she first started that she began to add to her program.
“In my first year here, we changed the curriculum to include landscaping,” Selbert said. “But the biggest change so far has been adding the greenhouse.”
Others feel, however, that the biggest change has been the level of student involvement in ag-science.
“(Students) have bought into the program,” said HVHS principal Terry Hubbard. “The children will even come to me and say, ‘I think we need to change this out,’ or, ‘we need to plant this here.’ She and the children take great pride in the grounds.”
