Planning Commission approves new ballfields at T.A. Dugger

T.A. Dugger Junior High School will soon have new baseball and softball fields after the Elizabethton Regional Planning Commission unanimously approved plans for the fields.

The new fields will be constructed on the eastern edge of the TAD campus. They will be located in the grassy area behind the media center. The fields will also require a reworking of the parking lot behind the media center. Some spaces in that lot will be lost but new spaces will be put in between the gym and the media center.

Director of Schools Ed Alexander said the fields were needed because the TAD baseball and softball teams have to travel away from the school to practice and play their games. Students now have to travel to Elizabethton High School or to the Park and Rec Department fields in Blackbottom. By keeping the students on campus, there will be lower liability on the school system for the students traveling away whenever they have a practice or a game.

Commissioner Dena Bass had some concerns that the movement of the parking lot would cause parking problems at the school, especially during football or basketball games. She also asked if the new parking lot layout would leave enough space for emergency vehicles to access the school.
