An Elizabethton-born pastor was arrested Monday on murder and attempted murder charges upon his release from an Alabama hospital where he has been undergoing treatment for self-inflicted stab wounds since the January death of his wife and wounding of his 18-year-old daughter in their church-owned home, police say.

According to Gardendale, Ala., Police Chief William Walker, the Rev. Terry Greer was released from the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital and immediately transported to the Jefferson County, Ala., Jail where he is being held without bond.

According to local authorities, Greer’s charges stem from a Jan. 10 shooting at the suburban Birmingham home provided to his family by the Gardendale-Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church where he served as pastor since last June.

Police reported that Greer fatally shot his wife, Lisa Greer, 52, and then turned the gun on his daughter, Suzanna Greer, but the teenager was able to take the gun from him and run to a neighbor’s house for safety.

Authorities said Terry Greer then locked himself in a bathroom and repeatedly stabbed himself in the chest and neck with a kitchen knife.

He was then transported to the hospital, where he has been undergoing treatment for those injuries and pneumonia, which he contracted after arriving at the hospital, police said.
