Pair of Cyclones named all-state6:12 am | December 21, 2012
The Tennessee Sports Writers Association didn’t overlook the Elizabethton High football team.
On Thursday, the Cyclones’ Ethan Thomas and Terrence Turner were selected to the TSWA’s Class 3A all-state squad.
Picked as a running back, Thomas became the second player in EHS history to rush for 2,000 yards in a season, gaining 2,095 on 268 carries. Averaging 7.8 yards per attempt, the sophomore also racked up 19 touchdowns as the Cyclones won the Three Rivers Conference championship and reached the state semifinals.
Turner, a 1,000-yard rusher in 2012 (116-1,112, 9.6 avg., 14 TDs), earned all-state recognition as a defensive back. The senior topped the EHS secondary with 49 tackles, including 39 solo or primary hits.
Recovering two fumbles, Turner also picked off a pass in Elizabethton’s 11-3 year.
Other Northeast Tennessee players making the all-state squad are Chuckey-Doak’s Bryce Malone (athlete) and Jaylynn Kesterson (def. lineman) of West Greene.
The 4A team was also released on Thursday, with Greeneville’s Tyrus Rollins landing a spot at linebacker.
The 5A and 6A units were unveiled this morning. Tennessee High’s Adam Mitchell (wide receiver) and Michael Osterman (def. back) of Daniel Boone were 5A choices.
Dobyns-Bennett players showing up on the 6A list were Malik Foreman (athlete) and Devaun Swafford (def. back).
No area players were voted to the 1A or 2A squads, which became public Wednesday.
