Betty Ann Heaton
Betty Ann Heaton, 72, went to be with her Lord, Monday, August 30, 2010, at her residence. Born in Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Sanford and Ruth Shell McKinney. Mrs. Heaton was a member of Gray United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Reasoner’s Sunday School Class and was on the Bereavement Committee. She was a sponsor for the St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
She is survived by her husband, Ed Heaton; a son, Keith Heaton and wife Judy of Kannapolis, N.C.; a daughter, Sherri Wilson and husband Ron of Unicoi, Tenn.; three brothers, Bill McKinney and wife Lucille and Eddie McKinney, all of Roan Mountain, Tenn., and Sanford McKinney Jr. and wife Rosemary of Kingsport, Tenn.; three sisters, Ethel Tegtmeyer and husband Darrell of Jonesborough, Tenn., Carolyn Johnson and husband Dick of Elizabethton, Tenn., and Cheryl Miller and husband R.L. of Elizabethton, Tenn.; five grandchildren, Max Bacon, Kelly Heaton, Jon Heaton, Lauren Bacon and Austin Wilson; and several nieces and nephews.
The family received friends Wednesday, September 1, from 5 until 7 p.m. at Gray United Methodist Church. A funeral service for Mrs. Heaton followed at 7 p.m. with Rev. Jim Goddard, John Hitechew and Rev. Jodie Ihfe officiating. Interment will be held Thursday, September 2, at 11 a.m. in the Johnson Cemetery in Roan Mountain, Tenn. Pallbearers will be family and friends. A funeral procession will leave the funeral home at 10 a.m. Thursday. Betty J. Gouge
Betty J. Gouge, 73, of Elizabethton, went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday, August 31, 2010, at her residence following an extended illness. She was the daughter of the late Clyde B. and Viola Putman Hughes and was born in the Hughes Herrell Township of Mitchell County, N.C. She lived most of her life in Elizabethton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a step-grandson, Christopher Smith. Mrs. Gouge was a homemaker who faithfully served her husband while he served his country for over 20 years in the United States Navy. She was a member of East Side Free Will Baptist Church and a former member of Burbank Free Will Baptist Church. She loved needlework and Swedish weaving.
Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Fletcher C. Gouge Jr., of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, John and June Gouge, Elizabethton, and Scott and Diana Gouge, Unicoi; two grandsons, Andrew Gouge, Elizabethton, and Alex Gouge, Unicoi; a step-grandson, Timothy Smith, Pineola, N.C.; a step-great-grandson, Ethan Smith, Pineola, N.C.; five sisters, Emma Jean Deetz, Martinsville, Va., Shelby Brumit, Fran Taylor and Joyce Thomas, all of Roan Mountain, and Lola Mae Guyn, Elizabethton; and four brothers, S.D. Hughes, Roan Mountain, Dallas Hughes, Lenoir, N.C., Alvin Hughes, Elizabethton, and Russell Hughes, Roan Mountain. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service for Mrs. Gouge will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, September 2, in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Rev. Justin Deaton and Rev. Mark Birchfield officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, prior to the service, and at the residence at other times. The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, September 3, in the Mountain Home National Cemetery, Mountain Home, Tennessee. Eddie Murphy
Eddie Murphy, 53, 167 Log Cabin Road, Elizabethton, passed away on Sunday, August 29, 2010, at Johnson City Medical Centere. He was the son of the late Earl Murphy Jr. and Goldie Mae Arnette Murphy and was born in Washington, D.C. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Houston Murphy, and two brothers, Gary Murphy and Rex Murphy. Mr. Murphy was a former employee of Snap-on Tools of Elizabethton. He enjoyed landscaping, yard work and hunting. He liked to watch NASCAR and wrestling on television and loved to collect junk.
Survivors include his fiancée, Brenda Place, of the home; four children, Joshua Samuel Murphy and his wife Carol, Telford, Charity Nicole Tolley and her husband James, Hampton, Grace Rexanna Whaley and Benjamin Job Whaley, both of Elizabethton; a step-daughter, Dawn Kennedy, and son-in-law, Greg Mann, Elizabethton; six grandchildren, James Tolley, Douglas Tolley, Gregory Tolley, Stephanie East, Tyler Murphy and Keisha Keith; a sister, Jennie Birchfield, Elizabethton; and four brothers, Dennis Murphy, Elizabethton, Jackie Murphy and his wife Cindy of North Carolina, Kenneth Murphy and Tony Murphy, Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Reese E. Taylor
Reese Elonda Taylor, 32, of Elizabethton, passed away on Saturday, August 28, 2010, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. She was the daughter of Hugh Anderson, Jonesborough, and Barbara Ann Taylor Odem, Elizabethton. She was born in Carter County. Ms. Taylor was preceded in death by a special friend, Gaylon McConnell.
Survivors, in addition to her father and mother, include her step-father, William Odem, and her step-mother, Crystal Anderson; two daughters, Sydney Taylor and Cameron Taylor, of the home; her fiancé, Jason Wright, Elizabethton; four sisters, Anetra Hillman and her husband Demarcus, Athens, Ga., Joanna Fain, Elizabethton, Chantel Anderson and Brandy Anderson, Jonesborough; two brothers, Leland Napier, Jonesborough, and Cory Anderson, Jonesborough; a niece, Jada Odem, Athens, Ga.; four uncles, Sid Taylor of Utah, Josh Taylor and his wife Dora of Utah, Earl Taylor, Elizabethton, and John Taylor and his wife Theresa, Bristol, Tenn.; two aunts, Regina Goins and her husband Paul, Bristol, Va., and Freda T. Wilson, Johnson City; and her special cousins, Alice Taylor, Steven Wagner and Natosha Reddick, all of Elizabethton.

Billie G. Nave
Billie Gail Bryant Nave, 70, of Johnson City, passed away on Monday, August 30, 2010, at Erwin Health Care Center following an extended illness. She was born in Alva, Ky., and was the daughter of the late William Earnest and Viola Hodge Bryant. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Earl Nave; a brother, Jerry A. Bryant; and two sisters, Jacqueline Bryant Slemp and Marjorie Bryant Cannon. Mrs. Nave was a graduate of Elizabethton High School and a librarian at the Johnson City Public Library. She was a member of Hunter First Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, James Gregory and Deborah Nave, Grand Rapids, Mich.; two grandsons, Alex and Aaron Nave; a sister, Betty Bryant Elliott, Johnson City; and two brothers, Ted Bryant, Elizabethton, and Peter Bryant, Garner, N.C. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Charles S. Onks
Charles S. Onks, 93, of Jonesborough, passed away Sunday, August 29, 2010, at Johnson City Medical Center. A native of Pounding Mill, Va., he was the son of the late John N. and Carrie Wilson Onks. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Viola Anderson Onks; three brothers, Harry Dee Onks, Don Onks and Buford Onks; and a sister, Hazel Onks. Mr. Onks was a member of Midway Baptist Church. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service as a Postal Clerk after 26 years of service. Charles was a guitarist, playing locally and professionally.
Survivors include two sisters, Ruby Crigger, Johnson City, and Anna Ellis, Jonesborough, and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Amedysis Home Health for the loving care they gave Charlie, especially Charlie’s angels: Kristi, Laurie and Regina.

Emma Lee Richardson
Mrs. Emma Lee Oliver Richardson, 95, Elizabethton, passed away Saturday, August 28, 2010, at Life Care Center of Elizabethton. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Jim and Nancy Estep Oliver. Mrs. Richardson was a homemaker and a member of Unaka Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Stacy Richardson, in 1962; a son, Robert Richardson; a daughter, Lula Belle Holder; a grandson, Terry Holder; and by six brothers and five sisters.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, James “Snook” and Kathy Richardson, Elizabethton; a step-son and his wife, Gene and Ima Jean Richardson, Ona, W.Va.; three grandchildren, Brian Richardson and wife Diane, Sherry Allen and husband Junior and Jerry Holder; six great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and her special friends, Joe Williams and Gary Arnold.

Mildred J. Blackwell
Mildred Joyce Blackwell, 80, Elizabethton, passed away Sunday, August 29, 2010, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. A native of Washington County, she was a daughter of the late James Benjamin and Ethel Callie Profit Proffitt. Mrs. Blackwell had lived most of her life in Carter County. She was a 1947 graduate of Hampton High School. She was of the Baptist faith. Mrs. Blackwell loved to quilt and work in her flowers. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Gary Vernon Blackwell, two brothers and a sister.
Survivors include her husband, Verl Blackwell; two daughters, Judy Lipford and Sharron Blackwell, both of Elizabethton; a son, James Norman Blackwell, Elizabethton; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Ersel R. Campbell
Ersel Ruth Arnold Campbell, 74, 117 Estep Hollow Road, Elizabethton, passed away Friday, August 27, 2010, at the residence of a son, David Campbell, Conover, N.C. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Jess and Alpha Brown Arnold. Mrs. Campbell formerly worked in the furniture industry in North Carolina. In recent years she was employed as a caregiver. She was of the Christian faith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Campbell, and six brothers.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Audra and Bert Smith, Connelly Springs, N.C.; three sons, David Campbell and Loree Hammons, Conover, N.C., John Campbell, Mountain City, and Daniel Campbell and Carol George, Elizabethton; six grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Nila Taylor and Dottie Arnold, both of Elizabethton; four sisters-in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Graveside services for Mrs. Campbell will be conducted at 4 p.m. Sunday, August 29, in the Garland Cemetery with Mr. Buddy Arnold officiating. Selma Sams
Selma Sams, 92, 1393 Bristol Highway, formerly of 285 Old Lacy Hollow Road, Elizabethton, went to be with her Lord, Friday, August 27, 2010, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. Our precious mother is resting peacefully in Heaven; her humble Christian life touched many. Mrs. Sams was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late John Samuel and Mamie Slagle Reynolds. She was a faithful member for 30 years at Sims Hill Christian Church, but due to failing health attended Lower Shell Creek Christian Church and Brick Christian Church. Mrs. Sams was a homemaker and a retired cook from Keenburg Elementary School and was a charter member of the Keenburg Family Community Club. She loved quilting for which she won many blue ribbons throughout her life. She loved to garden and provided flowers for her church from her flower garden. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Sams, November 2, 2000, and two daughters, Ruby Jean Sams, in 1948, and Linda Kay Sams, in 1945.
Survivors include two daughters, Karen Sams and special friend, Jimmy Hampton, Elizabethton, and Gloria Holly and husband, Gerald, Elizabethton; three sons, Ross Sams and wife, Barbara, Art Sams and Greg Sams, all of Elizabethton; five grandchildren, Barbara Earlene Rutledge and husband, Steve, Bluff City, Jessica Taylor and husband, Anthony, Chucky, Tenn., Jeremy Holly and wife, Michele, Elizabethton, David Sams and wife, Valerie, Rogersville, Tenn., and Josh Sams and wife, Rachel, of Pennsylvania; four great-grandchildren, Amber Rutledge, Nashville, Tenn., Addison Holly, Elizabethton, Bailey Sams and Kylie Sams, both of Rogersville, Tenn.; a special friend and caregiver, Sharon Kyte, Elizabethton; and Rev. Horace and Violet Bowers, who were friends and neighbors for over 40 years. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
