Ruth Allen Reynolds Poore, age 96, of Bluff City, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 9, 2013, from Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was born in Carter County to the late M.D. and Cordova Reece Allen. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two husbands, William L. Reynolds in 1971 and Orville G. Poore in 1985.
Mrs. Poore graduated from Elizabethton High School and East Tennessee State University, where she received bachelor’s and master’s degrees. She taught in the Carter County Schools system and was the administrator of the Title I government program.
She was a member of Bluff City Baptist Church. Before her failing health, she was an active member of all church activities, serving as organist, teacher, Kid’s Bell Choir director, and chairman of church flowers. She had always been interested in the Southern Baptist Mission Program. She served as vice-chairman of the Watauga Baptist Association, under the leadership of the late Mrs. Mary V. Mount. She was the former chairman of the Bristol Christian Women’s Club, of the Stone Croft Ministries, for two terms, and an area representative of the Stone Croft Ministry for the Bristol area.
She was a member of the Bluff City Music Club, a former first vice president of the Tennessee Federation of Music Clubs, president of District IV of East Tennessee Music Clubs, member of the Organist Guild of Johnson City, and member of the University Women’s Club. She was also selected to be the decorator for the Deep South Music Convention Banquet in Brevard, N.C.
Mrs. Poore was also a member of the Fairmont Garden Club of Bristol; Tennessee Federation of the Flower Show Judge’s Club in Knoxville; International Arrangers Club based in Atlanta; the Deep South Garden Club Convention and a master flower show judge.
She was also a charter member of the Community Relations Board of the Jacob’s Creek Job Corp. Survivors include special cousins, Richard Bowling and wife Susann, and Taylor Bowling; sisters-in-law, Mary Ruth Dowell and Louise Reynolds; first cousins, Bill Allen, Mary Emma Brown, Edna Collins, Mary Bryant, Ruth Baker, Martha Dorsey, and Kenneth Humphery; very special cousins, Luther “Bud” Cress family, Alma Worley, Bill Allen family, Frank Allen family, Judge W.R. Allen family, Frank Ward, Jerry Nave, Douglas Nave, and Joe Treadway family; and special friend and caregiver Kathleen Buckles. A large number of nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service will be conducted at 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 11, at Tetrick Funeral Home, Bluff City, with the Rev. Bill Duncan and Kevin Watson officiating. Music will be under the direction of Scott Reynolds and Gene Estep. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. prior to the service.
The committal service and entombment will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 12, in the Heritage Chapel of Peace, in Glenwood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Mike Carrier, Bill Ray, Andy Hood, Mike Allen, Bill Anderson, John Allen, Carrol Montgomery, Tracy Trott, Larry Collins, and Henry Allen. Honorary pallbearers will be her church family, friends and neighbors. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:15 a.m. to go in procession to the cemetery.
