Rowena Elliott Greene, 99, of Roan Mountain, Tenn., passed away at Hillview Health Center in Elizabethton on Wednesday, March 20, 2013, after a long illness.
She was married to her wonderful husband, Truman Greene, for 64 years, before his passing in 1993. She was known to so many as just, “Granny Greene.” All that ever met her loved her dearly.
She was born in Roan Mountain, Tenn., to the late William and Mary Jane Hopson Elliott, on June 4, 1913. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Wilma Wantz; a grandson, Matthew Roberts; a great-granddaughter, Jada Sanderlin; a great-great-granddaughter, Kendra Ollis; three brothers, William, Bert and Nat Elliott; two infant brothers; and three sisters, Betty, Nora and Gertie.
Granny and her husband Truman operated the Greene Shoe Store and Shoe Repair Shop in Roan Mountain for many years. She and Truman were foster parents to many foster children over the years. She was a member of Burbank Free Will Baptist Church for over 50 years.
Granny is survived by a son, Edward Greene, Elizabethton; two daughters, Lola Mae Hughes and husband Donald, and Phyllis Roberts and husband Douglas, all of Roan Mountain; nine grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; two special nephews, Billy Elliott and Randy Julian; and two special nieces, Joan Norris and Golda McKinney.
The funeral service for Mrs. Greene will be conducted at noon Saturday, March 23, in the Rhododendron Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Roan Mountain, with Mr. Douglas Roberts and Mr. Derrick Hughes officiating. Music will be provided by great-great-granddaughters, Sierra Whitehead and Jennie Jarrett, soloist and guitarist. There will not be a visitation time. Friends may call at the home of either daughter. The graveside service will follow in the Greene Cemetery. Pallbearers will be selected from family members.
