Richard D. “Red” Edens, 78, of Elizabethton, passed away Wednesday, March 13, 2013, at his home.

He was the son of the late John H. and Flora Elmar Prince Edens and was born in Carter County, Tennessee.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister. Judy Edens Britt.

Mr. Edens was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served his country in the United States Air Force. He attended Milligan College and ETSU. He was the founder of Edens Carpet, President of the Carter County Chamber of Commerce in 1976, past member of the Rotary Club and the  Elks Club, and was an avid basketball player and golfer.

He was a member of Pleasant Beach Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Zella Byrd Edens, of the home; a daughter, Angela D’Amato and husband, Tim of Spartanburg, S.C.; sons, Rusty Edens and wife, Julie, Mike Edens and wife, Donna, and Richard “Scot” Edens and wife, Brenda, all of Elizabethton; grandchildren, Michael Edens, Shay Spires, Jacob Baker, Sierra D’Amato, Michelle Edens, Tracy Lethcoe, Brandon Lethcoe, Seth D’Amato, and Emily Edens; great grandchildren, Sophie, Alaina, Talia, Breyonna, Shandon, and Kairi; a sister, Norma Rowlette of Johnson City;  a brother, Roy Gene Edens, Greeneville, Tenn.; and special cousin, Charlie Edens. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The celebration of Mr. Edens’ life will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 16, 2013, at Tetrick Funeral Home with the Rev. Mike Fowler, Dr. Willie Malone, and the Rev. Bobby Stout officiating.

The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Saturday prior to the service. Music will be under the direction of Greg and Tammy Rustin. Honorary pallbearers will be Coach Charlie Bayless, Carmen Dugger, Bill Greene, David Mahaffey, Jim Holmes, Bill Prendergast, Howard Matherly, Frank Whitson, Sonny Smith and numerous other friends.

Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers may make donations to Happy Valley’s Charlie and Jane Bayless Scholarship Fund, 108 Wildwood Drive, Johnson City, TN 37601.
