Ray Davenport, 87, of Elizabethton, passed away on Monday, August 12, 2013, at his residence, following an extended illness.
He was a native of Carter County and a son of the late Wilburn H. and Ella Cole Davenport. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Rondol Davenport, Earl Davenport, Chesley Davenport and Herbert Davenport, and one son, Tommy Davenport.
Mr. Davenport had retired from North American Rayon Corporation after 40 years of service and was of the Baptist faith. He was a United States Navy veteran of World War II and loved to fish.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Lillian Riddle Davenport, of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Mike Sansom, Elizabethton; one son and daughter-in-law, Don and Judy Davenport, Elizabethton; one sister, Berniece Massey of Maryland; one brother and sister-in-law, Chester and Mary Lou Davenport, Elizabethton; four grandchildren, Holly Street and husband Patrick, Johnson City, Travis Sansom and wife Jennifer, Elizabethton, Chrystie Kyte and husband Jason, Elizabethton, and Mark Davenport, Elizabethton; and two great-grandchildren, Nathan Kyte and Reagan Sansom, both of Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The graveside service for Mr. Davenport will be conducted at 1:45 p.m. Wednesday, August 14, in the Mountain Home National Cemetery with Mr. Travis Sansom and Mr. Jeff Underwood officiating. Military Honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at the residence at anytime. Active pallbearers will be Mike Sansom, Nathan Kyte, Mark Davenport, David Stout, Tim Davenport and Patrick Street. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the funeral home at 1 p.m. Wednesday to go in procession. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Connie Glasure, Gary Dula and the staff of James H. Quillen V.A. Medical Center for all the love and care shown to Mr. Davenport during his illness.
