She was born in Sumner County, Tenn., but had lived most of her life in Elizabethton, Tenn. She was the daughter of the late Albert Bennett and Mildred Kirkham West.
Mrs. Harper graduated with the class of 1961 at Sumner County High School. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Elizabethton and truly cherished teaching her Sunday school classes and singing in the church choir. She thoroughly loved helping people and was actively involved with the WMU and the Open Heart Missions Group. In addition to these organizations, she also volunteered at the Shepard’s Inn of Elizabethton.
Mrs. Harper retired from Elizabethton Federal Savings Bank.
Peggy is survived by her husband of 51 years, Jerry Harper, of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathy Harper May and Joe May, and granddaughter, Emily, all of Elizabethton; a son and daughter-in-law, Randy Harper and Lori Harper, and grandsons, Price, Reed and Vance, all of Clemmons, N.C,; and four sisters, Barbara Hailey, Lois Savage, Diane Dorris and Teresa Graves, all from Middle Tennessee. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service for Mrs. Harper will be conducted at 7 p.m. Sunday, November 4, in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Rev. James Lindsey officiating. Music will be under the direction of Tonia and Chris Hughes, John Bunn and Rene Huntsinger. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, prior to the service. The graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, November 5, at Happy Valley Memorial Park in Elizabethton. Active pallbearers will be selected from friends and family. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Messenger Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church and all of her friends at Elizabethton Federal Savings Bank. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:15 a.m. Monday to go in procession to the cemetery.
