Nell Matherly, 86, of Elizabethton, went home to be with her Lord on Monday, October 22, 2012, from Hillview Health Center, following an extended illness.

She was a native of Carter County and the daughter of the late Daniel Marion and Lydia Mae Glover Matherly. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Ethel Matherly, Louise Hay and Anna B. Whaley, and a brother, Howard “Red” Matherly.

Miss Matherly was retired from North American Rayon Corporation and was the oldest member of Sims Hill Christian Church, where she served as the former Secretary and Treasurer. She enjoyed gardening and reading.

Survivors include two sisters, Jean Matherly, of the home, and Sue Hampton of Elizabethton; a sister-in-law, Lois Matherly of Elizabethton; five nieces, Ann Thompson of Jonesborough, Jill Baggett of Alabama, Lori Gabert of Alabama, Sandy Cole of Elizabethton and Melissa Carr of Elizabethton; and a nephew, Dan Matherly of Kingsport. Several great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.

The funeral service for Miss Matherly will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday, October 23, in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Mr. Gerald Holly, minister, officiating. Music will be under the direction of Steve Baggett. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, prior to the service, or at her home at any other time. The graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 24, at Sims Family Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Dan Matherly, Tim Carr, Dylan Carr, Jimmy Cole, Jordan Cole and Mack Henry. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Sims Hill Christian Church. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday to go in procession to the cemetery. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Elizabeth DeFluiter, Dr. Jonathan Bremer and staff, Carter County Rescue Squad, Hillview Health Center and Pro-Care for all their love and care shown to Nell.
