Mervin I. Peters, 81, of Elizabethton, passed away on Sunday, December 23, 2012, at Johnson City Medical Center following an extended illness.
He was the son of the late Ira Elias and Dorothy Anna McIlvain Peters. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Meade Peters and Raymond Peters; a sister, Lorraine Perryman; and a granddaughter, Samantha Kate Peters.
Mr. Peters was a retired Lieutenant Fireman at the Baltimore County Fire Department. He was a member of East River Park Christian Church and loved working with roses. He helped to start the Watauga Rose Society, the Chesapeake Rose Society and the Maryland Rose Society.
Mr. Peters was a veteran of the U.S. Army Engineers Corps, serving as a Staff Sergeant during the Korean Conflict.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Jean Peters, of the home; a daughter, Karen Gehring, White Hall, Md.; two sons, Stephen Peters, White Hall, Md., and Eric Peters, Baltimore, Md.; 10 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and special friends, Tom and Barbara Barkes, Gray, Tenn., Reba and James Whitehead, Elizabethton, L.D. and Jackie Adams, Elizabethton, and Tracie Clawson, Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service for Mr. Peters will be conducted 7 p.m. Thursday, December 27, in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Mr. Barry Pettit, minister, and Mr. Tom Barkes officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, prior to the service. The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, December 28, in the Mountain Home National Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be John Rominger, L.D. Adams, Tracie Clawson, Shane Clawson, Rick Milligan, Herman O’Quinn and Jim Whitehead. Honorary pallbearers will be Don Woods, Henry Hunt, Ken Long, Dr. Chris Sholes, Gary Woods and Joe Yelinek. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10 a.m. Friday to go in procession to the cemetery.
